Welcome to Da Krong. Da Krong has arguably been one of the most hostile regions in the Vietnam war to date. There have been numerous attacks on our relatively few Bases in the region. To say that nowhere is safe is a massive understatement. The Viet Cong and NVA have extensive supply routes, cave networks, and mountain range coverage throughout the area. Places we have cleared 30minutes earlier have been reoccupied rapidly, resulting in the disappearance of numerous platoons in the jungle. Western Forces have relatively few sympathetic Vietnamese villages in the area when compared to the VC and NVA. The VC especially, have made a point of punishing these villages. Ground forces in Da Krong have two main objectives enforced by General Westmoreland himself: (1) maintain a high body count, and (2) protect the local civilian population (within reason).
1SQN has been put on standby at Da Krong airbase for any reactionary forces that are needed in the region. Fixed wing assets and heavy artillery are off-station for 1SQN use due to higher priority tasking. As a result, 1SQN are likely to be tasked to lower priority disturbances such as employing “hearts and minds” tactics for the local population. Large-scale engagements should be avoided and as such platoon safety should be prioritised over that of the local population. It is a regrettable decision to be made, but civilians don’t win wars, we do.
– Assault teams: CMD/ALPHA/BRAVO/CHARLIE
– IDF: Thumper (mobile)
– Rotary (logistics, transport, medevac): XRAY
– Rotary (CAS): DAGGER
– Fixed wing (CAS): N/A
Likely – Both sympathetic and unsympathetic.
Da Krong. Jungle, hills, woodland.
Shocking, absolutely shocking.
1SQN is to conduct an exemplary patrol throughout Da Krong to show the local population that they are our priority and that we will protect them
at all costs to the best of our ability. Any Enemy camps or villages should be removed as efficiently as possible as to retain that high body count.
The mission will occur in SIX phases:
Phase One – Briefing and Preparation
Phase Two – Insertion
Phase Three – Light patrol for any disturbances
Phase Four – Hearts and minds
Phase Five – Extraction
Phase Six – Profit
