An Ironic Mission

Setup and Preparation: 1915hrs (Sydney time)
Server Preparation and Mission Load: 1900hrs (Sydney time)
Briefing and Mission Launch: 1930hrs (Sydney time)

The failing Khmer Rouge in Cambodia has fled east into the dense jungle of Vietnam. The Vietnamese lacks both the military and the resources to effectively flush of the exiled Cambodian government and has requested international support.

The Chinese

The Chinese were quick to respond to their neighbors call for assistance, offering both economic and military aid. China owns large portions of land in Cambodia and Vietnam, which are directly threatened by continuing conflict caused by the Khmer Rouge. These land parcels, have been purchased by China in an effort to resolve their national food crisis, with their exponentially growing population. Economically speaking, China wishing to see the end of the Khmer government makes perfect economic sense. The Vietnamese however, declined China’s offer for assistance, calling for instead (despite the region’s history) NATO involvement. The reasoning behind this is not immediately apparent, however when you start looking into China’s recent aggression in the South China Sea, things become more clear.

Post-1990, Sino-Vietnam relations dramatically improved and a suit of bilateral trade agreements were created.By 2011 the annual trade between the two nations was valued at USD $25 billion. In the same year, Vietnam announced new military exercises being conducted in and around the Tanoan islands, also quickly passing a law that declared the Series of Islands in Vietnam sovereign waters. Naturally, the Chinese declared this as “invalid”, passing their own laws that placed the Tanoan Islands and their waters firmly in their control. From then on, tensions escalated steadily, resulting in the attempted invasion by the PLA on the Islands of Tanoa. NATO involvement resolved the conflict after a lengthy campaign spearheaded by Australian Forces.

The Khmer

The conflict involving Vietnam, China and NATO essentially formed the void that allowed the Khmer Rouge to grow. It is suspected that the Khmer Rouge’s dramatic rise has been due to foreign investment, the most popular opinion being, that the PLA funded the Khmer’s military as a contingency plan for the Tanoan islands. By the time China had been removed from the Tanoan Islands by Australia, the Khmer Rouge had succeeded in overthrowing the Cambodian government and established a new party called the Democratic Kampuchea . What followed was the systematic slaughter of 3 million Cambodians. The new government tried to legitimize the genocide as a  national depopulation directive. NATO responded…

By mid-late 2017 the Khmer Rouge had been completely removed from Cambodia by NATO. The remaining officials have fled to the dense jungle of the Cambodian-Vietnamese border, where traditional NATO forces cannot operate effectively. Due to Australia’s success in the jungles of Tanoa, NATO has requested that Australia conduct the ‘mopping up’ of the Khmer Regime army and officials.

Tanoan Islands

The Tanoan islands haven’t seen conflict since late 2016. Australia has announced it’s gradual withdrawal from the Island, after the resolution of the Khmer conflict and the result of the Referendum of Tanoan Freedom. The referendum is a UN-sanctioned vote on the fate of the Tanoan islands, where the residents get to decide on which of several states they are adopted into or they declare independence. The referendum has seen a rise of several political parties in the Islands, all reflecting possible vote outcomes. Major parties include spokesmen from  China, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia, and the Philippines. A popular movement for Independence has also been established. Of concern on the Island is an emergence of a militant group called the Tanoan Loyalist Forces. They appear more radical and aggressive than the plethora of other political parties.

The Chinese government have publicly condemned the Khmer Regime and have sent their two aircraft carriers, the Liaoning (Type 001), Type 001a  off the coast of the Tanoan Islands to conduct their annual military exercises as a ‘show of force for the once popular  Democratic Kampuchea’. They have assured Australia that these operations will not impact the Tanoan Islands in any way, and they will certainly not impede Australia’s assistance to the Vietnamese people.

Australia is acutely aware of China’s desire to control the South East China Sea and as a result have not been able to provide the Vietnamese as many assets as publicly promised.

Primary Objectives:

  1. Airport de Tanoa is the main military hub for the Australian Airforce in the region. We, the PLA, believe they have numerous armoured, fixed-wing and rotary assets located at the airport any one time. Our primary objective for this mission is to conduct an asset denial exercise onto this airfield…  That’s a fancy way of saying we are going to blow everything up.

  2. The stakeholders for the Tanoan vote of independence are gathering at a hotel directly to the north of the airport. Diplomats who are not sympathetic to the Chinese agenda and are known to be attending this meeting are Ton Gia Huy (Vietnam), Adelio Esequiel Tiu Roces (Philippines), Huang Lee (Taiwan) and the Australian Admiral David Powell.  Diplomats attending who are sympathetic to the Chinese cause are Alfons Litaay (Indonesia), Ho Vireak (Cambodia), Fajar bin Ayu (Malaysia) and the Chinese Emissary Chung Lai. Everyone who does not align with China’s interests, or is an accessory must be killed in that meeting. Those who are inline with China must live, with the exception of the Chinese Emissary. PLA has executive authority to kill Chung Lee in order to deflect attention from China, he is easily replaced.

Tertiary objectives that may help the completion of the attack on the airfield and hit on the meeting are:

  1. Collect civilian vehicle stash from two Tanoan PLA sympathisers Ye T’an and Manchu Yin
  2. Destroy the two communications array situated to the airfields north.
  3. Destroying the generators at the Desiel power station that power the airfield.
